Does Scripture still apply today? Should we live by the Bible?

Where can you find fair and balanced Christian news? It’s an increasingly difficult thing to find. Our friends in the United Methodist Church are being flooded with left leaning progressive news by the United Methodist News Service. It can be daunting to ferret out what’s real and what’s fake.

We like to think you can come here, and find truth. Publishing truth is not always popular. It’s too easy these days to slip into the comfy chair on the left, or the right and never get up. But there is one constant that can never be changed and that’s the Word of God. Though many are working tirelessly to alter what the scripture say, and some theologians have gone so far as to say the that some of the scripture doesn’t apply today. We should just set some scripture aside, because it’s simply not comfortable to us anymore.

The good news is that is hogwash. The scriptures are written for today. The fact is the scriptures have worked really well for a really long time. What’s not worked so well is societies willingness to morph its morals. For society to be able to live with their desire for sinful things, it must come up with arguments for why scripture simply doesn’t matter. But, it does.

If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.” Leviticus 20:13

Adam Hamilton has led a charge that the scripture in the Bible on homosexuality just don’t apply anymore. He says they were never written for us anyway. That argument doesn’t hold much water given you could say that about any of the scriptures. Is it possible that some day in the future, progressives will want to say that killing is not a sin.

Thou shalt not kill.” Exodus 20:13

I don’t think that’s too far of a stretch. The Bible is full of life lessons, and yes rules to live by. These rules have served us so well, we founded America on them. So the next time you see, hear or read that scripture doesn’t apply to today, just say hogwash.

“Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. 14 But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.” Matthew 7:13-14

Timely scripture for the times we are in. It seems the say “the more things change the more they stay the same” apply to scripture as well. We are here with the gay issue due to semantics from the liberal society. The simple definition of “marriage” was changed from “one man / one woman” to openly include gay unions. We were sold a bill of goods that this was to “protect’ same sex couples and give them rights like hospital visitations, and insurance inclusions. The “rights” could have been extended without changing the fundamental definition of the word “marriage”. This was a smokescreen to bully society into the construct that same sex marriage is a “normal” occurrence and a right to be protected. This act alone gave cover for the church to follow a secular belief while abandoning a biblical belief. Words matter as well as their definition and time should not change them.
