United Methodist Ramp up for Same Sex Weddings against Church Law

In another show of solidarity against following the UMC, Book of Discipline (church law), the United Methodist News Service published a story this week on 500 UMC pastors who have agreed to conduct same sex unions. You read that right, and they plan to do it even though it’s prohibited by church law.

I don’t want this post to be about same sex unions or in this case marriage and wedding ceremonies, but rather the complete disregard for following their own laws. The Episcopal Greetings opening the Discipline says this:

The Discipline as the instrument for setting forth the laws, plan, polity, and process by which United Methodists govern themselves remains constant.

The Discipline is very clear about it being the law, but this seems not to matter to many in the UMC. The denominations Bishops have continued to ordain gay clergy in defiance of the law and the UMC News Service often posts articles on that seem to gloat at the defiance.

So what does the Bible say about following laws.

Romans 13:1-2 says: “Obey the government, for God is the One who has put it there. There is no government anywhere that God has not placed in power. So those who refuse to obey the law of the land are refusing to obey God, and punishment will follow.”

Well there you have it, and guess what the Discipline says, the General Conference serves as the denominations law making body. Yep delegates to the general conference are the governmental body of the church. So when Bishops and pastors disobey church law, they have disobeyed their own form of church governance and they have sinned by refusing to obey God and they will be punished.

Let that sink in.

I should have probably noted, that there are and will be some (many) in the UMC that say these church laws need to be changed, they are outdated, they were written for another people in another time in a land far away. So with that, they (progressives) believe justified in not following the law.

The problem with this thought process is that it is flawed. The Book of Discipline is the denominations law. It can be changed every four years at General Conference. It has not been changed and in fact has been strengthened. Picking and choosing which laws we will follow is not how this should work, if you follow the scripture. But what we see often from progressives is a new (a la cart) approach to scripture. If you don’t like something in the Bible, just set it aside and write it off as not applicable.

We have seen people around the world for as long as the Bible and scriptures have existed that didn’t like something in the Bible. We most often see burglary as a good example of where some folks don’t like the 7th Commandment, “thou shalt not steal.” What about the 6th Commandment, “thou shalt not commit adultery.” I could list all 10 Commandments and we would see that all have been violated by those who simply don’t want to follow the law. Make no mistake about it, what we are seeing out of the progressives in the UMC is no different.

No church law will be honored guy by the 500 who have chosen to ignore it and do what the world wants, rather than Be a recipient of God’s Grace.
