No, he did not!
There is a video floating around the world wide web and mostly on facebook that shows a sound bite (first sign it’s false), of Pope Francis giving an Easter Vigil liturgy. In the sound bite the Pope can be heard referring to Lucifer as the father of Jesus Christ.
This is alarming!… please sit back down.
First let me say I’m not a Catholic, though I am a member of the Catholic Church as it relates to the Church Universal. I am not a fan of this Pope, he has been known to make statements (not biblical) that I just can’t agree with. But here’s the skinny on this video.
It has been around a while and it’s an overt attack on Catholics and the Pope. Satan isn’t the first guy to be called Lucifer. In fact, Lucifer is a Latin word derived from the roots lux (light) and ferre (to carry). In other worlds the one who brings light in the night.
Spoiler alert — think God.
The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. John 1:5
If you’re following me at this point, you might have come to the conclusion that Satan does not bring the light, but instead brings the darkness. But…
The LORD is my light and my salvation— whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life— of whom shall I be afraid? Psalm 27:1
So in this Easter Vigil liturgy the Pope he is not talking about or invoking satan, but instead using the name that invokes light which is representative of God the Father, who by the way has a son he named Jesus Christ.
I hope that all made sense, if not let me know and I’ll go deeper.
